Finding the Useful god - Case 1

What is Useful god? It is the single most important star in a chart that helps to maintain the balance of a chart. When reading a chart using the technical method, we generally take the resource star as the Useful god for weak charts and the output star as the Useful god for strong charts. When using the classical method, we analyse the chart to see whether we need to

1. regulate,
2. medicate or
3. arbitrate

the chart to maintain its balance. When the Useful god is strongly rooted and protected, then the chart is superior.

In the above example, what do you think is the Useful god?

This is a weak bing day master born in the si hour of a winter month. In the classical method, we also look at a chart pictorially to see whether an image can be formed. Bing represents the sun while gui represents the cloud. The sun is most useful when born in the chen or si hours because the morning sun is not too hot and helps to warm the earth. What happens when this sun is blocked by the cloud?

Imagine the sun in the cold winter morning being blocked by the cloud. What do we need here?

Yes, we need the fire place which is represented by the ding fire. Ding fire is the Useful god as it is needed to regulate this chart. Now, on the technical side, the ding fire needs to be protected by the wood stars. Otherwise, the strongly rooted water stars will counter it. So, the primary Useful god is the ding fire while the secondary Useful god is the jia or yi wood.

Hence, both the technical and classical methods can be applied simultaneously.

So different charts need a rob wealth star or self star. With a rob wealth star, will they need to guard against robbery? Like a double edge sword?

Rob wealth star or self star is bad only if the day master is a strong day master. That is why, we still need to know the strength of the day master. It is best if the Useful god is both positive from the technical and the classical methods. As in this case, the bing day master is a weak one. So, the ding fire is both positive from both methods. Unfortunately, ding is not found in the natal chart.

If for example, ding is found in the spouse palace, then the spouse will be instrumental in helping him or her.

If this is a strong day master, then technically, ding can cause the owner to lose money but at the same time it can give him or her the warm comfort of a cold winter morning. So, we interpret that this person has the need to spend money to be happy.

HI Kenny,

Yes, ding fire as in yin fire. Without ding in the natal chart, this chart is not that superior. However, ding can still appear in the luck pillar or the annual pillar.

What is the difference between regulate, medicate and arbitrate? I think regulate means to bring pictorial balance as in this case of a bright valley becoming inhospitable because of the weak strength of the winter sun to combat the cold mist hanging over it. Medicate would suggest the day master was sickly and needs the element that counters the elements in the chart making it weak, such as yi surrounded by ren would become floating wood if it has an absence of earth to control the water, despite earth technically weakening an already weak day master. And I am guessing that arbitration is where there are many clashes within a chart and an element is needed to reduce this, so it's the reverse of medicate which is coming from excess resource whereas this would be excess conquering. This is just my guess and I would love to hear you explain more!

Hi Charlotte,

In my next post, you will know what is the meaning of medicate. One good example will explain it. Please wait.

Why is Bing DM weak in this case? It is rooted in both year and hour pillar.

Hi Andrea,

You have to attend a proper ZiPing bazi class to learn how to technically determine the strength of a day master. I'm sorry I can't discuss it here.

It is my intention in this blog to share my BaZi knowledge through case studies using mostly the ZiPing technical method. This technical method stresses on the production and the destruction cycles of the 5 elements namely wood, fire, earth, metal and water. However, in July 2016, I have decided to include the classical method as I believe that the correct approach towards BaZi is to blend both these methods.
